Mendip Rocks is an annual festival that hosts a series of geological events during the autumn in October to celebrate the fascinating 450-million-year history of the Mendip Hills. The festival involves the local community in experiencing our beautiful landscape and understanding the story of the Mendips.

Whatever your level of interest, there are inspiring events for all, including:

• Explore Ebbor Gorge & Mendip Wolves - Art installation at dusk, projections in the trees inspired by Ice Age discoveries of wolf bones in local caves.  Fri 2nd and Sat 3rd Oct.

• Explore Ebbor Gorge - Open day Sat 3rd Oct with family activities, guided walks and talks about the last Ice Age cave finds, with Prof Danielle Schreve, and artist Sean Harris - The Mendip Wolves art installation.   Please book for Ebbor walks & art events on Eventbrite.

• Digging Deep - discover the geological history of the Somerset Coalfield, talk & walk.

• Art workshop in the disused quarry at Fairy Cave, near Stoke St Michael.  

• Building stones trail of Glastonbury 13th Oct and new geo trail of Shepton Mallet 15th Oct.

• Geological history tour of the building of Wells Cathedral - 21st Oct.

• Quarry minibus tours - to 3 operational Mendip quarries, Torr Works, Halecombe & Whatley quarries.  limited places must be booked.  AM or PM tours from SESC.

• Guided walks to Mendip geological sites led by geologists - Tedbury Camp Vallis Vale, Sand Point & Charterhouse to Burrington Combe.  

• Geological lecture day hosted at SESC Sat 17th October; Anjana Khatwa "Whispers of Rock" book author, Vince Simmons - Mendip cave palaeontology and Ryan Antcliffe - Ichthyosaur research.

• Family events and art workshops held on Saturday 3rd at Ebbor Gorge and 24th October at SESC - fossil inspired printing & rock painting.  Explore the SESC geo collections, tea and cake and fossils to buy, bring in rocks to be indentified by our expert geologists.
