About the Somerset Earth Science Centre
The Somerset Earth Science Centre was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 2009. It is a beautiful energy-efficient building in a peaceful lakeside setting, surrounding by woodland.
We have a large classroom area equipped with the latest audio visual technology. In addition, we offer kitchen facilities, a cloakroom and toilets and sheltered outside seating areas. Visitors have access to a large grassy meadow and stunning walks around the lake. As a result, we provide a perfect venue for educational visits, business meetings and community activities.
Accessible for all
As a state-of-the-art architect-designed facility, the Earth Science Centre is accessible to all visits. There are no steps around the centre and the doors are wide enough for wheelchairs to pass through. We have adapted toilet facilities for those with limited mobility or other needs.
The fully-equipped kitchen provides you with everything needed to create your own refreshments. Alternatively, we have good relationships with a variety of local catering companies who can meet your needs.

All of our teaching staff have relevant higher education qualifications, ensuring we offer a varied and engaging programme that covers Mendip geology, quarrying, environmental and earth science.
Our staff and volunteers are fully DBS checked and have undertaken safeguarding training. Lead staff hold up-to-date first aid qualifications and have passed minibus driving certification with Somerset Country Council.
Quarry tour leaders are fully inducted into appropriate health and safety procedures for each operational quarry they enter.
We are grateful for the support of our sponsors, who funded the centre building in 2009 and continue to support the running of the Somerset Earth Science Centre, enabling us to offer learning experiences to local school children and community groups.
