Mendip Rocks! Festival Events Listing 2018

Fri 6th July to Wed 31st October

Geological events to celebrate the 450 million year geological history of the Mendip Hills provided by the Festival partners; Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Somerset Earth Science Centre (SESC) and The Mendip Society. Events for all; cave visits, family fundays, guided walks, tours of working and disused quarries, arts workshops, stone carving, geology field visits and more. The festival finale day includes inspiring geology talks to discover "Geo Resources in our Lives" in Wells Museum. For information phone SESC: 01749 840156. Schools Event

Friday 6th July - 9.30-3pm "Rock on Mendip at Burrington Combe"

Day of educational hands on fun for local schools in the Combe, provided by the festival team and Butterfly Conservation. (Invited schools only - Burrington, Blagdon and Shipham Primary schools booked on four classes 110 children - Yr2,3,4,5 &6).

Family Funday

Saturday 7th July - 10am-4pm "Rock On Mendip at Burrington Combe"

Family fun - learn how Burrington Combe and the Mendips were made, make a piece of limestone rock, fossil fun, geo time trail, pebble painting, cave art using natural pigments and hunt in the limestone grassland for bugs and butterflies.

Bring in fossils for identifying and view the Mendip Rock box.

Parking in lower car park of Burrington Combe/Burrington Inn. BS40 7AU. No booking needed.

"A Story in Stone" Wells Building Stone Heritage Guided walk

A walk around the City of Wells led by geologist Doug Robinson, to see the range of building stones, all from the Mendip AONB on the city's doorstep and which tell of a 200 million year journey across the planet. Find out more of their formation and use in the wonderful local buildings. Meet outside Wells Museum, Wells Cathedral Green BA5 2 UE. Some cobbled footpaths, dogs on leads, for 15yrs+. Donations £3pp. Max 15.

Tuesday 31st July - 2pm-4pm

Fairy Cave Quarry Botany and Geology walk. A survey walk with botanist Liz McDonnell, (Somerset Rare Plants Group) and Dr Gill Odolphie (Somerset Earth Science Centre), to discover the plant life that has evolved to colonise the disused limestone quarry which is now a SSSI. Parking: On lane side & in private carpark on Limekiln Lane, Stoke St Michael, ST65734753. Max 15.

Whatley Quarry Tours with Somerset Earth Science Centre (SESC).

A minibus tour to see the vast working quarry at Whatley with dramatic exposures of carboniferous limestone. For 16yrs+ Charge £5 pp. Wear boots, long sleeves, no shorts, safety wear provided. Pen Hill Geo Walk "The southern slopes of Pen Hill -
200 million years of geology on Wells doorstep" Walk part 1

A walk led by geologist Doug Robinson tracing ~ 200 million years of Earth history from the Carboniferous to Jurassic periods, from the southern tropics across the equator into desert settings then invasion by the Jurassic seas. Route is ~ 4.5 km with overall elevation gain of ~ 130 m. Walk along public footpaths and ~ 100m along narrow road, with no footpath. Meet in Milton/Split Rock quarry, Wells (ST 5389 4709) (Max 15 places). Parking along upper part of Milton Lane between ST 5413 4694 and ST5425 4668; do not to park on actual lane or block gateways - beware large stone blocks are hidden in grass verge on west side of lane.

Family Funday

Sat 4th August - 10am-4pm "It's A Blast at Westbury Quarry"

Open day to discover how the quarry has been restored for wildlife and is now used for explosive safety research by Alford Technologies.
Enter the prize draw for your chance to "push the button" to blow up an old car. - safely controlled by expert Nigel Taylor. Also children's wildlife, rock and fossil fun. Geology tour and wildlife walks.

Parking in carpark on site, off Stancombe Lane, Westbury Sub Mendip, BA5 1HT.

Torr Works Quarry, Frome.

Somerset Earth Science Centre, (SESC), Moons Hill Quarry, Stoke St Michael, BA3 5JU.

Pen Hill Geo Walk part 2

"Mendip Lead Mining" - Guided walk with Richard Frost of the Mendip Society to discover the history of this fascinating industry on Charterhouse.

Batts Combe Quarry Tour - a Limestone Legacy

A guided tour with Hanson's UK to view inside this Burrington Oolite quarry, a mineral very valuable as a pure limestone for animal feed, toothpaste and many industrial fillers. Wear boots, long sleeves, no shorts, safety wear provided. Meet at Batts Combe Quarry office car park, Warrens Hill, Cheddar, BS27 3LR. Limited 10 places. Charge £5pp. Book am or pm tour.

Join the team from Somerset Earth Science Centre for some fossil hunting fun on the coal heaps left behind from coal mining and now a geological reserve. "Sketching the Quarry Faces at Fairy Caves" Adults workshop at Fairy Cave Quarry, Limekiln Lane, Stoke St Michael.
